Natural History Society of Northumbria (NHSN)

Core membership

Established in 1829, the Natural History Society of
Northumbria (NHSN) seeks to inspire wonder in the
natural world. We are one of the oldest and most
active natural history societies in the world and have
published a journal, the Northumbrian Naturalist,
since 1831. This contains scientific papers, research
and observations regarding nature in North East
England and is the only journal of its kind in the
region.
Since our inception, we have sought to encourage
engagement with the natural world. First, through
our Hancock Museum and later, at Gosforth Nature
Reserve. Today, we remain committed to this
mission, working with our amazing volunteers and
1700 committed members to study, safeguard and
celebrate the natural world in an era when nature
finds itself in deep trouble on a national and local
scale.
We manage and protect Gosforth Nature Reserve,
a designated SSSI and urban oasis on the outskirts
of Newcastle and provide a home to naturalists from
all corners of North East England, from the Tees to
the Tweed. In doing so, we facilitate discussion and
discovery; providing opportunities for enthusiasts,
experts and academics alike to broaden their
engagement with nature through winter lectures,
field trips, education courses and publications.
