VONNE shows racism the red card

As the team at VONNE continues to grow, our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) group work hard to ensure that all staff are supported with training sessions around awareness and inclusion. Awareness of EDI topics help us to bond as a team and continue to provide support to the VCSE sector from a position of knowledge and understanding.

Last week, we were lucky enough to be joined by Alba from Show Racism the Red Card (STtRC) as she delivered a fantastic awareness raising session around racism in society.

Alba welcomed us into a comfortable and honest virtual session where the team engaged in important group discussions covering topics including micro-aggression, unconscious bias, and privilege. Breakout rooms let us all explore our feelings and personal experiences in a safe space to then feed back to the group. It created a dialogue around areas of safety, inclusivity, and behaviours in society that we hadn’t had the opportunity to discuss as a team before, which was interesting and valuable to be a part of.

Show Racism the Red Card is the UK’s leading Anti-racism educational charity and recently celebrated it’s 25th anniversary. Established in 1996, thanks in part to a donation by then Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop; Shaka harnessed his own personal experience of racism and status as a professional footballer to use education to challenge racism in society. SRtRC now provide educational workshops, training sessions, multimedia packages and other resources all with the purpose of tackling racism. Across the UK, they currently provide educational sessions to more than 50,000 individuals per year.

In addition to the direct education of young people and adults, SRtRC produces educational resources to challenge misconceptions, stereotypes and negative attitudes in society.
