To kickstart a year of awareness at VONNE, we were thrilled to welcome Justine from Show Racism the Red Card for a training session on unconscious bias, protected characteristics and promoting equality and anti-racism. Operations and Member Services Assistant, Mandeep Chohan has written a blog reflecting back on the training, and what we learned.
VONNE recognises that every individual brings a unique perspective, set of experiences, and talents to the table, and we strive to create an environment that values and celebrates diversity in all its forms. Our EDI group work together to support the wider organisation in gaining awareness, receiving training and to ensure that we are in the best position possible to support the VCSE sector.
Last week, we were joined by the wonderful Justine King from Show Racism the Red Card, who delivered a great session on unconscious bias, protected characteristics and promoting equality and anti-racism.
During this hybrid session, we were able to explore subjects such as racism, sexism, privilege, our own bias’s and more. The session was very varied, and we also had breakout rooms to give us the opportunity to to discuss topics and themes in a safe space. This type of training not only increases our awareness but also strengthens our working relationships as a team. We talked about the ways in which unconscious bias can manifest, through quick assumptions made in everyday conversations and scenarios, and through stories seen in mainstream media. We then learned about developing awareness to reduce our own unconscious bias (which we all have!) and how to have uncomfortable discussions in a bid to remove barriers to equality. Finally, we thought about what privilege means, and how those of us who are fortunate enough to live with privilege can use it to advocate for others. It was an engaging few hours that opened up some great discussions across our organisation.
Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) is the UK’s leading anti-racism educational charity established in January 1996, thanks in part to a donation by then Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop. The majority of the campaign’s work involves the delivery of educational workshops to young people and adults in schools, workplaces and at events held in football stadiums. Across the UK, SRtRC provides educational sessions to more than 50,000 individuals per year, along with hosting the UK’s largest equalities themed School Competition. In 2023, SRtRC has surpassed the landmark milestone of engaging 1 million people in their programmes.
Embracing individuals of varied backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives is not merely a commitment but a cornerstone of VONNE's ethos, ensuring that the organisation remains a champion for positive change.
