Inclusion, Representation and Participation in Place-Based Work: Learning from Big Local

What does it really take to ensure community-led programmes are inclusive, representative and shaped by the people they are intended to benefit? 

Join us for this interactive learning session exploring key lessons from Big Local, one of England's largest and longest-running resident-led funding programmes. Drawing on over a decade of experience across 150 neighbourhoods, we'll examine what helped communities participate in decision-making, where barriers emerged, and what funders and delivery organisations can do to create more inclusive approaches to place-based work. 

Through research insights, practical examples and discussion, we'll explore the difference between representation, participation and inclusion, and consider how power, meeting culture, accessibility and local relationships influence who gets involved and whose voices are heard. We'll also reflect on the challenges of ensuring resident-led approaches do not unintentionally reproduce existing inequalities. 

The session will be particularly valuable for VCSE organisations delivering place-based initiatives, community development practitioners, trusts and foundations, public sector funders, and anyone interested in strengthening community influence and resident leadership.
