Primary Care Counsellors (GP Service) – Sunderland Counselling Service

Hours: 37 hours p/w including a minimum of one evening per week.  Job share will also be considered.

Salary: £26,887 (full-time equivalent)

Contract type: Permanent

Location: Sunderland Counselling Service, John Street, Sunderland.

Sunderland Counselling Service (SCS) is seeking to appoint Primary Care Counsellors to work as part of our GP Service in Sunderland.  The successful therapists will provide time limited counselling to adults who self-refer or are referred by GP practices as part of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service in Sunderland, with a wide range of issues that impact negatively on their emotional health and wellbeing.

We are hoping to recruit to our full-time positions, (37 hours per week) but also have part-time hours available and will welcome applications from those who wish to work part-time and / or job share.

The successful candidates will be competent qualified counsellors with post qualification counselling experience.  We are looking for those who will be able to work independently, and aware of how to effectively use outcome measures in counselling. Experience of working within a time-limited framework is required.

The counsellors will deliver up to six sessions of one to one therapy either face to face, via video, or telephone, to those aged 16 and over who are from different cultural backgrounds and ages (using interpreters when necessary).  Our client group include those who are those experiencing mild to moderate mental health conditions and who require support with a range of presenting issues including depression, anxiety, loss, bereavement, relationship difficulties and more.  Counsellors may also be required to complete assessments for new referrals, and facilitate counselling support groups.

Dependent upon ongoing restrictions in healthcare settings due to COVID-19, the post holder may be expected to take a blended approach to delivering services from our base in John Street, appropriate community bases across the city including GP practices and also confidentially  from home.
