Our Lifestyle Service has been invaluable for many older people across Sunderland during Covid restrictions and lockdowns. We are aiming to grow the service to meet demand and to boost our team with new people that want to make a real difference to the older generation.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Lifestyle Worker. The role supports the individual needs of older people who want to remain independent and includes day to day tasks which involve: light house work, shopping and companionship ensuring older people are able to enjoy a fulfilling and positive Lifestyle.

Lifestyle Workers work flexibly between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, and are able to fit their preferred hours of work around their other commitments.

  • The post of Lifestyle Worker is a zero hours’ contract
  • Hours of work may increase or decrease on a weekly basis to meet the needs of the service

Responsible to:      Service Improvement Manager

Base:                         Various locations across the City of Sunderland

Salary:                    £9.50 per hour


Job Purpose

To deliver a quality service to those requiring support and assistance to live an independent life by undertaking day to day tasks such as house work, shopping and companionship.

Job Description

You will:

  • Develop appropriate professional working relationships with service users.
  • Maintain the skills to undertake house work, shopping and or companionship duties.
  • Contribute to service user wellbeing.
  • Provide information on other support services and activities, signposting where appropriate.
  • Undertake basic record keeping.
  • Manage and follow simple financial procedures including those to do with financial transactions e.g. shopping for service users.
  • Report without delay changes in service user’s health, abilities or circumstances to the Lifestyle Co-ordinator/Administration Assistant.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all aspects of the work undertaken.
  • Abide by and implement all policies and procedures of Age UK Sunderland, including being aware of, and responsible corporately and

as an individual, for Health & Safety policy.

  • Undertake all reasonable tasks, in keeping with the level of responsibility of the post, as requested by management team.  
  • Be aware of and understand procedures for safeguarding vulnerable adults. 
  • Be GDPR compliant at all times.

Working Pattern:    Zero hours contract - Hours are flexible within
9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday working week.

Essential Criteria:

  • Have a flexible approach to work and be willing to undertake a variety of tasks.
  • Undertake house work duties to a good standard.
  • Have a ‘can do’ attitude and be able to use own initiative.
  • Understand the needs of older people.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with people.
  • Have an awareness of safeguarding vulnerable adults.
  • Have ability to keep basic records.
  • Flexibility with regard to working times and areas the City of Sunderland.
  • Ability to work alone with the minimum of supervision.
  • Driving license with access to a vehicle to use for work.


Be physically able to:

  • Lift domestic equipment and service users shopping bags etc. as appropriate.
